Over 10,000 individuals imprisoned in Uzbekistan in H1 2024
The number of convicted individuals amounted to 29,382, of which 10,287 were sentenced to imprisonment and 18,579 were given other types of punishments.
In the first half of 2024, courts dealing with criminal cases reviewed 29,086 criminal cases involving 37,179 individuals, according to the Supreme Court.
It was noted that 465 individuals were acquitted and rehabilitated. The number of convicted individuals amounted to 29,382, of which 10,287 were sentenced to imprisonment and 18,579 were given other types of punishments, while 516 individuals received suspended sentences. Of the convicted individuals, 26,028 were men, 3,354 were women, 11,145 were young people (including 1,068 minors), and 1,105 were individuals over the age of 60.
A total of 3,432 individuals were released from custody in the courtroom due to being assigned punishments not related to imprisonment, 16,624 individuals were conditionally released early from serving their sentences, the punishment of 5,620 individuals was replaced with a milder form, and charges against 6,976 individuals, which were unsubstantiated or misclassified by preliminary investigation bodies, were dismissed or requalified.
Seventy-one individuals (youths, women, and others) received non-imprisonment punishments based on guarantee letters.
During the reporting period, the majority of criminal cases involved fraud, violation of traffic or vehicle operation safety rules, theft, embezzlement or misappropriation, forgery and use of documents, stamps, seals, and forms, intentional infliction of minor bodily harm, hooliganism, intentional infliction of moderate bodily harm, and illegal actions involving narcotic drugs, their analogs, or psychotropic substances without the purpose of distribution.
Due to the effective use of the reconciliation institution, 6,337 individuals were exempted from criminal liability.
In appellate procedure, 4,798 criminal cases involving 6,395 individuals were reviewed. Decisions made by first instance courts were annulled for 307 individuals and amended for 1,311 individuals.
In cassation procedure, 1,493 criminal cases involving 1,636 individuals were reviewed. Decisions made by first instance courts were annulled for 106 individuals and amended for 369 individuals.
In the supervisory procedure, 2,188 criminal cases involving 2,560 individuals were reviewed. Decisions made by lower instance courts were annulled for 45 individuals and amended for 337 individuals.
The Judicial Board for Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court reviewed 504 criminal cases involving 590 individuals in the supervisory procedure. Decisions made by lower courts were annulled for 49 individuals and amended for 121 individuals.
