August 31st is the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Repression. On this occasion, representatives of state and public organizations, elderly people, and intellectuals gathered at the Martyrs' Memorial Complex.
This ceremony, held in harmony with the Independence Day celebrations, evokes a deep emotional response as the nation's luminaries are remembered. It symbolizes that the dedication to the homeland, even after many years, is still valued, and no good deed goes unnoticed.
At the complex, the Quran was recited beside the symbolic grave and prayers were offered.
"On the eve of Independence Day, in today's environment of peace and freedom, it is our duty to honor the pure names of our heroic ancestors and to show respect for their blessed memory," said Shavkat Mirziyoyev. "That is why we are restoring the honor of our compatriots who have passed away. The noble slogan 'Human Dignity is Sacred, Memory is Holy' is firmly taking root in our lives. We are building sacred memorial complexes. Artistic and scientific works, as well as films, are being created about our enlightened ancestors. 'Memory' books are being prepared. International conferences are being held. In the last three years alone, we have rehabilitated the names of more than 1,200 victims of political repression. What does this signify? It signifies that justice is unbreakable and that truth will ultimately prevail."
It should be recalled that from October 4 to 16, 1938, sentences were pronounced against 507 political prisoners from Uzbekistan. Leading figures were executed. Among them were prominent intellectuals such as Fitrat, Cholpon, Abdulla Qodiriy, and Khudaybergan Devonov, as well as advanced specialists who had studied in Germany and renowned state and public figures. The most horrifying point is that they were executed on October 4, but the sentence was issued on October 5.
