Hydrogen sulfide leak prompts evacuation near Baysun mine
Due to a violation of technological processes, a release of hydrogen sulfide occurred at the "25th Anniversary of Independence" mine in the Baysun district of Surkhandarya region. Residents near the mine were evacuated.
On September 1, a hydrogen sulfide gas leak was observed at a mine in the Baysun district of the Surkhandarya region.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, at 15:17, drilling operations were being conducted on well No. 604, which belongs to the "25th Anniversary of Independence" mine located in the "Kulkamish" neighborhood of the Baysun district. Due to a violation of technological processes, a release of hydrogen sulfide occurred.
To ensure the safety of the population, residents living near the mine were evacuated to a safe area.
No injuries or fatalities were reported. "The situation is fully under control. There is no reason to panic," added the ministry.
According to the Surkhandarya regional administration, the head of the region, Ulugbek Kosimov, and representatives of relevant official organizations and agencies arrived at the site of the incident.
Studies of atmospheric air pollution levels and efforts to mitigate the consequences are being conducted in the area where the emergency occurred.
Under normal conditions, hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with a sweetish taste and a characteristic unpleasant heavy odor of rotten eggs. In high concentrations, it is toxic and flammable.
