Emergency martial law declared in South Korea amid political tensions
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared emergency martial law, citing concerns over national security and public safety, as political tensions rise in the country.
In a televised address on Tuesday, President Yoon stated that the decision was aimed at safeguarding the nation from perceived threats, including challenges posed by North Korea and domestic unrest.
“To protect a free and democratic South Korea and to address pressing security concerns, I am implementing emergency martial law,” Yoon said. “This measure is necessary to ensure public safety and restore stability in the face of ongoing challenges.”
President Yoon expressed concerns over what he described as a lack of support for essential state functions. “Key budget allocations for national operations, crime prevention, and public safety have been obstructed, creating significant vulnerabilities and affecting public confidence,” he explained.
The announcement has sparked a mixed response. Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party, voiced his opposition to the measure, describing it as “unnecessary” and pledging to stand with the people in opposing it.
The opposition Democratic Party, which has clashed with Yoon over the budget bill and other issues, has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the declaration.
Since taking office in 2022, President Yoon has faced challenges navigating an opposition-controlled parliament, which has made advancing his legislative agenda difficult. The administration has also been dealing with public scrutiny over various issues, including controversies involving Yoon’s close associates.
The declaration has left many South Koreans surprised and seeking clarity.
