Uzbekistan appoints its first ambassador to Cyprus

Uzbekistan has officially appointed its first ambassador to Cyprus, with Abat Fayzullaev assuming the role. Fayzullaev, who also serves as Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Italy, presented his credentials to Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on December 19.

The credential presentation ceremony underscored the potential for expanding bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Cyprus. During the event, President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of fostering ties not only on a bilateral level but also within the framework of the European Union.

“We place particular emphasis on developing bilateral cooperation with Uzbekistan, as well as strengthening our collaboration within the EU framework,” stated the Cypriot leader.

Diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and Cyprus were established on May 30, 1997. However, Abat Fayzullaev’s appointment marks a milestone as he becomes the first Uzbek envoy to Cyprus. The embassy for Cyprus will operate out of Rome, where Fayzullaev also fulfills his duties as Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Italy, a position he has held since October 2023.
