The pearl of the Caspian – A photographic journey through Baku

A city where ancient history, national architecture, and futuristic design seamlessly merge — Baku stands apart from many other cities. Here, narrow alleys steeped in history exist side by side with modern skyscrapers, creating a unique blend of past and present.

At the heart of the city lies Icherisheher, a millennia-old fortress that has preserved the essence of Baku’s past. Inside its walls, two iconic landmarks — the enigmatic Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs — offer glimpses into the city’s rich history.

Among the city's modern architectural marvels, the Flame Towers are a striking feature. The trio of buildings, designed to resemble rising flames, pay homage to Azerbaijan’s historical identity as the "Land of Fire." This name originates from the natural gas vents that have been burning for centuries, such as the Yanardag ("Burning Mountain").

One of Baku’s distinctive characteristics is its abundance of balconies. Many of the city’s buildings feature them, adding a touch of elegance to their facades. This visual charm is vividly captured in the stunning photographs taken by Kun.uz photojournalist Muhammadjon Ganiev during his trip to Baku.
