Uzbekistan sees surge in household solar energy production and earnings
In Khorezm region, quarterly payouts nearly match the total for all of 2024.
In the first quarter of this year, 12,746 Uzbek citizens received subsidies for supplying electricity generated by their solar panels to the national power grid, according to the Tax Committee.
Total payments under the “Solar Home” program amounted to 8.147 billion UZS, with more than two-thirds of that sum — 5.65 billion UZS — disbursed in March alone. Altogether, 22,200 subsidy transactions were recorded.
Residents of Khorezm region received the largest share of payments. In just three months, they earned 2.67 billion UZS — nearly matching the total they received for the entire year of 2024 (2.8 billion UZS). Around 2 billion UZS of this amount was paid out in March.
Karakalpakstan ranked second with 1.07 billion UZS in subsidies (774 million UZS in March), followed by Bukhara region with 693 million UZS (454 million UZS in March). In Tashkent, residents received 585 million UZS over the quarter, while those in Tashkent region received 497 million UZS.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the subsidy program for households installing solar panels in February 2023. Payments are transferred to the owner’s bank card via the Soliq app by the 25th of the month following the reporting period.
In August of the same year, the president ordered the exemption of solar panel components from import duties and VAT — a move aimed at leveling the playing field between local manufacturers and importers.
According to the Ministry of Energy, during the first quarter, small-scale solar panels with a total capacity of 197.9 MW were installed at 10,117 sites across Uzbekistan. Of this, households accounted for 56 MW. The new installations produced over 60 million kWh of electricity.
