Uzbekistan strengthens liability for breaching the law On Personal Data

The President signed the relevant document on October 29. The changes will take effect 3 months after the law comes into force.

According to the amendments to Article 46-2 of the Administrative Responsibility Code, violations of the law on personal data will entail a fine in the amount of 7 times the minimum wage (1,890,000 soums) and a fine in the amount of 50 times the minimum wage (13.5 million soums) for officials.

In practice, citizens are fined from 3 to 5 times the minimum wage, and officials – from 5 to 10 times the minimum wage.

In accordance with the amendments to Article 141-2 of the Criminal Code, if this act is repeated within a year, one of the following punishments shall be applied:

• A fine of up to 150 times the minimum wage (up to 40,500,000 soums);
• Deprivation of certain rights for up to 3 years;
• Up to 2 years of correctional work.
