Paris-2024 Olympics: Uzbekistan narrowly defeated by Spain in historic debut
Uzbekistan made its Olympic debut in the first round of the Paris-2024 Olympics, facing the formidable reigning silver medalist, Spain. The match, held at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, showcased a spirited performance from Timur Kapadze's team.
From the outset, the Uzbek players demonstrated remarkable resilience and controlled much of the game. Despite their dominance, Spain capitalized on their first significant opportunity when Marc Pubill found the net, putting his team ahead 1-0.
In stoppage time of the first half, a foul on Khamraliev led to a VAR review and an awarded penalty. Eldor Shomurodov converted the 11-meter kick, marking a historic moment as Uzbekistan's first-ever Olympic goal, leveling the score at 1-1.
The second half saw continued intensity, and in the 60th minute, Sergio Gomez earned a penalty kick following a foul by Faizullaev. Uzbek goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov initially saved Gomez's effort, but Gomez soon scored again, regaining Spain’s lead at 2-1.
As the match progressed, Uzbekistan had several opportunities to equalize, but Spain’s defense held firm. Spain ultimately secured a hard-fought victory in their first encounter with Uzbekistan in Olympic history.
Uzbekistan will look to rebound in their second-round match against Egypt on July 27, scheduled to take place in Nantes.
